Release Notes: RealAudio Encoder 3.0 for Macintosh

System and Software Requirements

To use the RealAudio Encoder 3.0 for Macintosh, the minimum system requirements are as follows:

For best results, recommended systems are:

Hard disk space requirements depend on the size of the encoded file.

Supported Input File Formats

The RealAudio Encoder works only on monophonic .sd2, .aiff, .au, and .snd sound files recorded at a sampling rate of either 8 kHz, 11 kHz, 22 kHz or 44 kHz. If the sound file has a sampling rate close to one of these rates it will also be accepted, but there may be a slight degradation in the audio quality since sampling rate conversion is necessary. The valid sampling rate ranges are:

Sampling Rate Ranges

8000 to 8100 Hz
11000 to 11200 Hz
22000 to 22300 Hz
44000 to 44400 Hz

Note: The Encoder does not support compressed variants of the formats described above. If you encounter problems encoding a file, please verify that it is not in a compressed format. If it is, use a sound editing utility to convert it to a supported format.

You can use SoundHack, available at ftp://ella.mills.edu/pub/ccm/soundhack/, or SoundApp 1.5.1, available at http://www.umich.edu/~archive/mac/sound/soundutil/, to convert other sound file formats into one of the supported formats.

Keep in mind that audio files take up a lot of disk space before they are encoded.
