Macintosh Browser Configuration


How do I configure AOL 4.0 to work with RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh?

To manually configure the AOL 4.0 web browser, do the following:

  1. Start the AOL program.
  2. Connect to AOL.
  3. Click the My AOL button and choose Preferences.
  4. From the list of icons on the left, click Helpers.
  5. Click the Create Helper button.
  6. In the Open files with the following MIME type field, type the following:

    application/vnd.rn-realmedia

  7. In the Or the following suffixes field, type the following:

    rm

  8. Click the Select button and locate the RealPlayer program icon on your hard drive. (By default, located in the Internet:Internet Applications:RealPlayer folder.)
  9. Choose "PNRM" or "PNRA" from the Also open Macintosh files with type list.
  10. Select the Open those files with this helper application program even if America Online can open them check box.
  11. Click OK.

    Repeat steps 5-11, substituting the following file types:

      Open files with the following MIME type: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio
      Or the following suffixes: .ra, .ram

      Open files with the following MIME type: video/vnd.rn-realvideo
      Or the following suffixes: .rv

      Open files with the following MIME type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
      Or the following suffixes: .ra, .ram

      Open files with the following MIME type: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
      Or the following suffixes: .rpm

  12. Click OK to save your changes and close the Preferences window.
Test the installation by typing the following address into the AOL address bar:

How do I configure RealPlayer 8 to work with Internet Explorer 4.x - 5.0 for Macintosh?

To manually configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x so that it automatically starts RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh, do the following:

  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  3. Click on the triangle next to Receiving Files to expand the list of options.
  4. Click File Helpers.
  5. Click the Add button.
  6. In the Edit File Helper dialog box, enter the following information:

    Description: RealPlayer File
    Extension: .rm
    MIME type: application/vnd.rn-realmedia

  7. In the File Type section, click the Browse button, locate the RealPlayer 8 icon on your hard drive, and click OK. (By default, RealPlayer 8 is located in the Internet:Internet Applications:RealPlayer folder.)
  8. In the Handling section, choose Post-Process with Application from the How to handle list.
  9. Locate the RealPlayer 8 icon on your hard drive and click OK.
  10. Click OK, and then click OK again to save your changes.

Repeat the steps above for each of the following file types:

    Description: RealPlayer File
    Extension: .ram
    MIME type: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio

    Description: RealPlayer File
    Extension: .rv
    MIME type: video/vnd.rn-realvideo

    Description: RealPlayer File
    Extension: .ra, .ram
    MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio

    Description: RealAudio File
    Extention: .rpm

How do I configure RealPlayer 8 to work with Netscape Navigator 4.0x - 4.7x for Macintosh?

To manually configure Netscape Navigator so that it automatically starts RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh, do the following:

  1. Start Netscape.
  2. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  3. Click the triangle next to Navigator to expand the list of options.
  4. Click Applications.
  5. Click the New button.
  6. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:

      Description RealMeda File
      MIME Type audio/x-pn-realaudio
      Suffixes .ra, .rm, .ram

  7. In the Handled by section,

    1. Click Application.
    2. Click the Choose button, locate the RealPlayer 8 icon on your hard drive, and click Open. (By default, RealPlayer 8 is located in the Internet:Internet Applications:RealPlayer folder.)

  8. Click OK.

    Repeat steps 5-8, substituting the following file types:

      Description RealPlay File
      MIME Type audio/vnd.rn-realaudio
      Suffixes .ra

      Description RealPlay File
      MIME Type video/vnd.rn-realvideo
      Suffixes .rv

      Description RealPlay File
      MIME Type audio/x-pn-realaudio
      Suffixes .ram

  9. Click OK to save your changes and close the Preferences dialog box.

Once the RealMedia file types are configured, you will also need to configure the browser to recognize the RealPlayer plugin. Use the instructions below:

  1. Start Netscape.
  2. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  3. Click the triangle next to Navigator to expand the list of options.
  4. Click Applications.
  5. Click the New button.
  6. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:

      Description RealPlayer Plugin
      MIME type audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
      Suffixes .rpm

  7. In the Handled By section:

    1. Click Plugin.
    2. From the drop down menu, choose RealPlayer Plugin.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Click OK to save your changes and close the Preferences dialog box.
