Windows Browser Configuration

How do I configure the AOL 4.0 and 5.0 web browser to work with the RealPlayer 8 for Windows?

The process for configuring helper programs (i.e., MIME types) in AOL 4.0 and 5.0 has changed since AOL 3.0. You can no longer make MIME type changes from within the AOL browser. AOL 4.0 and 5.0 now use Windows 95 File Type settings. Follow the steps below to set up AOL to automatically start RealPlayer when you click a RealMedia link.

Note: A simpler way to accomplish this is to run the RealPlayer installation program again. Make sure you choose AOL 4.0 or 5.0 as your browser. From there everything will be configured automatically.

To manually configure the AOL 4.0 or 5.0 browser to automatically start RealPlayer 8, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button, choose Programs, and then Windows Explorer.
  2. In Windows Explorer, click the View menu and choose Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. Scroll to see if RealMedia File is in the list. If it is listed, double-click it to open the edit dialog box. If it is not listed, click the New button.
  5. In the dialog box, enter the following information:

    Description of Type: RealMedia File
    Content Type (MIME): application/vnd.rn-realmedia
Default Extension for Content Type: .rm

  6. Click the Edit button, enter the following information in the Action dialog box:
