Frequently Asked Questions
- What is RealProxy?
RealProxy is a streaming media proxy server which accepts RealPlayer connections, usually from an intranet and forwards them to external RealServers. RealProxy is used to manage streaming media traffic on a local networks, improve playback experience by bringing requested content closer to the RealPlayer and conserve bandwidth by reducing redundant requests for frequently requested media.
- How is RealProxy different from RealServer?
Unlike the RealServer, RealProxy does not host content. Instead, RealProxy is used to manage RealPlayer connections and to draw content already hosted by (far away) RealServers closer to the audience requesting that content.
- How should RealProxy be used?
RealProxy is intended to be run on corporate intranets, acting as a gateway that services internal RealPlayer requests for streaming media which is hosted on RealServers outside of the corporate network.
ISP customers looking for a solution to place at a POP are recommended to use a certified RealSystem G2 compliant caching partner such as Cacheflow, Entera or Inktomi. More information on their products may be found at http://www.realnetworks.com/products.

- Can RealProxy and RealServer be installed on the same hardware?
It is not recommended that both RealProxy and RealServer be installed on the same system. By default both RealProxy and RealServer use some of the same ports, thus port conflicts will arise.
- Can this version of RealProxy be installed over an older, evaluation version of RealProxy?
Yes, run the RealProxy installer and configure the target directory to be same one used by the previous version. Since this version will attempt to bind to the same ports used by the previous version, it is required that you stop running the older version prior to installing the new version.
