File Menu

Commands from the File menu allow you to play RealAudio and RealVideo files without using your World Wide Web browser to find files on the Internet, and to exit the RealPlayer 4.0. The following options are a vailable on this menu:

  • Open... Allows you to play local RealAudio and RealVideo files. Select a .rm, .ra or .ram file in the Open File dialog.

  • Open Location... Select this option to play RealAudio and RealVideo files through the Internet without using your World Wide Web browser. When the Open Location dialog appears, enter the URL (Internet address) of a .rm , .ra or .ram file, using the following notation:

      pnm://RealServer:Port#/complete-path-to-file

    where:

      pnm specifies that the file is located on a RealAudio or RealVideo Server
      RealServer is the IP address or Domain name of the RealAudio or RealVideo Server that serves this file
      Port# is the port number the Server is using if other than the default port 7070.
      complete-path-to-file is the complete path to the file on the RealAudio or RealVideo Server

    For example, type:

      pnm://video.real.com/welcome.ra

    This option is most useful to those who want to test the RealAudio or RealVideo Servers they maintain. For general use, it is easier to use your Web browser.

  • Open Recent Select this option to view a list of recently played clips. You can select a clip from this list to hear the clip again. You can change the number of clips displayed by editing general preferences.

  • Close Window Select this option to close a secondary window, such as the Connections Statistics window.

  • Quit Select this option to exit the RealPlayer 4.0.

Edit Menu

Commands on the Edit menu allow you to perform standard editing commands and view the Connections Statistics window.

  • Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear, Select All Standard editing commands.

  • Preferences... Select this option to display the Preferences window for configuring the RealPlayer 4.0. You can set preferences from this window. See How to Configure Your Preferences.

View Menu

Commands on the View menu allow you to modify the appearance of RealPlayer 4.0 and to set audio and network options.

  • Information & Volume Select this option to display the volume control, and the title, author, and copyright information for the clip; a check mark appears next to the option. Select the option again to hide the information; the check mark is removed.

  • Status Bar Select this option to display the Status Bar; a check mark appears next to the option. Select the option again to hide the bar; the check mark is removed.

  • Connection Statistics Select this option to display the transmission quality information in the Connection Statistics dialog. The Connection Statistics window reports the performance of the Internet connection between the RealAudio or RealVideo Server and the RealPlayer 4.0.

Statistics

This window reports the performance of the Internet connection between the RealAudio or RealVideo Server and the RealPlayer 4.0. It shows the number and percentage of data packets received, lost, late, early, lost in the last 30 seconds, and out of order.

Clip Menu

Some RealAudio and RealVideo clips are several files played one after the other. Commands from the Clip menu allow you to move between clips in a multi-clip RealAudio and RealVideo (.ram) file and when scanning. They are similar to seek buttons on a CD player. If there is only one RealAudio or RealVideo clip at the link you are accessing, these options are not available.

Previous Clip and Next Clip are also available from the shortcut menu that appears when you control-click the mouse button in the RealPlayer 4.0 window.

  • Previous Clip Select this option to play the previous clip in a multi-clip RealAudio or RealVideo (.ram) file or when scanning.

  • Next Clip Select this option to play the next clip in a multi-clip RealAudio or RealVideo (.ram) file or when scanning.

Sites Menu

Commands from the Sites menu allow you to access various pages at the RealNetworks and Timecast World Wide Web sites. This feature works with popular World Wide Web browsers. If you are connected to the Internet, and your World Wide Web browser is not open, RealPlayer 4.0 opens it for you.

Note: You must be connected to the Internet in order to reach these sites.

  • Real Home Page Select this option to access the RealNetworks Home Page.

  • Timecast: the RealMedia Guide Select this option to access Timecast: the RealMedia Guide. Timecast contains a list of World Wide Web sites providing RealAudio and RealVideo content.

  • AudioNet Home Page Select this option to access the AudioNet Home Page.

  • Purchase Player Plus Select this option to access the RealPlayer Plus purchase page.

Help Menu

Commands from the Help menu provide with online help and information about the RealPlayer 4.0.

  • Technical Support Select this option to access the RealNetworks Technical Support Library. You must be connected to the Internet for this option to work.

  • Common Questions Select this option to access the RealNetworks Frequently Asked Questions page. You must be connected to the Internet for this option to work.

  • Search Knowledgebase Select this option to access the RealNetworks knowledge base and search for the answer to a question. You must be connected to the Internet for this option to work.
